Such a big investment in the economy happened before during Roosevelt. At that time the world economic crisis had caused a long-lasting recession and an all-time high unemployment rate. The New Deal was Roosevelt’s stimulus plan to recover from the Great Depression. But ultimately it was the Second World War that fueled the economy again because of the high demand for production in the defence industry.

 Let’s hope Obama’s plan works out and the tax-payer’s money will not be victim to an act of desperation. Nevertheless, it would be far more desperate to involve the United States in another war to increase production and fuel the economy. We’ll see if Obama’s idealism will translate into hard numbers.

Unfortunatelly, the racism and brutality of the old regime lived on in the executive branch of the new government. At the same time the adjustment of the Greek economy to European standarts did not take the route desired. The shortcut to West-European wealth and prosperity translated into West-European prices but East-European wages. Highly trained professionals work for 800 Euros a month, which barely covers the cost of living.

 When the global financial crisis started, things worsened and people went out on the streets to demonstrate against the inactiveness of their government. During one of these protests last Saturday a police officer shot a 15-year old boy and the situation escalated. Since then the officials are having trouble to appease the population that has set buildings on fire, called out a general strike and demans new elections. 

 For now the worst seems to be over, but it may also be just the beginning. When the larger part of the population is as frustrated as the Greeks are right now, it is hard to believe that a few demonstrations and riots is all they need and then everything will go back to normal again. The riots will propably cease only then when a change in the ranks of the politicians has been made. And the turmoil and frustration in the Greek society will still prevail until the new governmant will have proven itself. Let’s hope the transition happens quickly.

Well, if people actually take this seriously they don’t need sex education but some brains! But wait, another thought: Why exactly is anal sex such a bad thing again? Oh yeah, sex itself is a nasty, nasty thing. And if you don’t happen to be gay you certainly don’t do THAT!

In the case of the “Day without a gay” they didn’t, which caused a very ambivalent effect during the protest on Wednesday in San Francisco. The organizers had intended to emphasize the importance of gay people in the community by boycotting shopping and their work place. Unfortunatelly, even gay people have businesses and are dependent on their income. Therefore criticism also came from their own ranks complaining about the loss of income the campaign has caused.

Nevertheless, it is good to see that the gay rights movements still finds its voice and can express its desire to be treated equivalent to heterosexuals. Although gay and lesbian people are inlcuded in ways never imagined decades ago there is still a long way to go to achieve the same legal rights regardless of their sexual orientation. For a country claiming to prohibit their congress from making laws respecting an establishment of religion there are quite a lot of religious ambitions involved in banning same-sex marriages.

How does it pay off for Sony? Well, first of all, their PS3 unit is struggling in sales compared to their competitors, so they need to make an effort to get back in the game. Second, who in the world is insane enough to pay for a feature other game units offer for free after he has already spent 400 bucks for a video game console?! And third, they are planning to charge gaming companies and other brands to create shops, sell goods and advertise. So don`t worry, if enough gamers catch on it will still be profitable for Sony in the long run.

If you saw yourself already compeating with Japanese super-gamers, I`ll have to disappoint you though. If you log on in the US you won`t be able to interact with gamers around the world (”due to cross-border legal issues” according to Sony). Nevertheless, I hope you enjoy yet another virtual reality that enables you to create the life you`ve never had and makes you forget about the unbearable reality of this world for a few hours a day.
